Rainy Sunday afternoon. I had lunch with a good friend of mine at an old-school themed diner that serves up homey, hearty local Singaporean-Chinese dishes (think grandma's or mom's cooking). The diner is housed in an old "dodgy" hotel named Kam Leng Hotel which I think might be creepy at night - I believe the hotel's façade is still in its original pre-war form. There is also a flight of granite stairs which connects different levels; back then there probably weren't lifts because hotels in Singapore back were just a couple of storeys high. I don't have photos of the interior, but I'm sure Google can churn out some interesting pictures of the hotel if you are curious to know how it looks like. Anyway, we tried the wok-fried pig trotter bee hoon (thin, rice noodles) and pork jowl mee kia (thin, egg noodles) since these are the recommended dishes. I thought the pieces of pork in both dishes were well marinated and tender. I could also certainly taste the wok-hey (charred wok flavour) in the bee hoon, which was very much welcome! As for the mee kia, it was springy and not clumpy, except that we thought it resembled more like kolo mee. I mean, if kolo mee were to be a No. 5 spaghetti, that would make mee kia a No. 3 spaghetti or spaghettini. Ah, before I forget, here are the photos of the food we had. P.S. Enjoy Eating House also has other outlets which seem less dodgy. ;)
